Overview
The Measure Ontologies is a powerful tool to help your team identify measures that matter.
In the early days of digital medicine, our team recognized the industry was lacking a common framework and standardized language for digital measures. Our Measure Ontologies connect 16,000+ measures with reported outcomes and technologies so you can evaluate digital measures in minutes, not days. For more background on how this resource was developed, check out our blog from September 2022.
If your team already has in mind concepts of interest such as activity, sleep, or gait, we recommend using the ontologies to explore the measurement options. For example, within sleep, you may want to focus on wake after sleep onset, sleep latency, time in sleep stages or total sleep time.
Viewing Measures
On the Explore Measures page, accessible through our navigation bar or the Catalog, click on the plus sign next to the categories listed to expand a list of associated measures.
AtlasPro and AtlasEdu users have access to all of the measures on this page, whereas OpenAtlas users may only access the four under "Try these Measures:". Please see our Additional Options article for more information.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The hierarchy of this list is important in that the parent nodes will include not only their information, but also the information of the measures nested within it. i.e. the Pulmonary node (presented below) will include information for Breath Analysis, Lung Ultrasound, Other Pulmonary Measures and its children (e.g. Nitric Oxide, Respiratory Effect), etc.
Measures are categorized into the 6 domains above. By expanding each domain you'll reveal the more granular Concepts of Interest (COIs) and Measures below. For example, within Cardiopulmonary & Physical Activity, you will find granular measures such as 'Time Sedentary' nestled below parent COIs like 'Activity Frequency and Detection'.
Once you've found a measure of interest, click on it to view its details. This will allow you to explore technologies that have been used to capture the measure, or medical conditions that have involved the measure.
Measure Details Breakdown
On a measure's detail page, you will find three cards: a general overview card, a list of Most Used Technologies, and finally, a list of Top Medical Conditions pertaining to the measure. Please note that some information on this page, including the Most Used Technologies and Top Medical Conditions cards, are Additional Options and therefore inaccessible by OpenAtlas users. Read more about our Additional Options here.
Measure Overview Card
The first card on a measure's detail page is the overview card. It contains useful information, such as:
Technologies: The total number of connected sensors and apps in Atlas used to capture this digital measure
Medical Conditions: The total number of medical conditions tracked in Atlas evidence using this digital measure.
Evidence breakdown: An aggregate of all pieces of evidence in Atlas using connected sensors in this measure category. Types of evidence include peer-reviewed papers, validation studies, clinical trials, and conference abstracts, among others.
Most Used Technologies
These are the connected sensors and apps in Atlas that were most cited capturing this digital measure. The contents of this card are sorted by the amount of applicable evidence, with the technology with the most evidence at the top of the list. Each technology is accompanied by its vendor, under the technology's name, and its total evidence count for the measure you're viewing. Clicking on a technology will take you to its detail page where you can learn more about it.
Top Medical Conditions
This card includes the medical conditions most often tracked in Atlas evidence using this digital measure. Clicking on a medical condition will take you to its detail page.
Measure View Options
Below the aforementioned cards is a full list of technologies and medical conditions associated with the measure that can be searched and refined using filters. The default view will show you the list of technologies. You must change your view option to show medical conditions.
For more information on how to effectively narrow down your results, please see our How to Use Filters and Search and Browse Atlas articles.
Changing the View
To change which information you're viewing, simply use the toggle on the right side of the screen above the Filter By box.
Technologies View
This is the default list view. You will find all technologies related to the measure in this list, with the ability to filter them on the right side of the screen. Technologies are currently filterable by:
Measure
Medical Condition
Technology Type
Regulatory Decision
Availability
Product Evidence Count
Vendor Evidence Count
Form Factor
Wear Location
Sensor Modality
Waterproof
API/SDK
There are multiple columns of information available in the table.
Technology: Contains a double-arrow icon to add the technology to the compare list and displays the technology's picture, name, and vendor
Measure: Any measure applicable to the technology is listed here in a hierarchical manner. You can expand the list by clicking the plus sign next to the measure. Additional measures are found by clicking on the "+#" button where applicable (see animation below).
Evidence Count: The total amount of vendor and product evidence per technology.
Regulatory Decision: If the technology is FDA Registered or CE Marked.
Medical Condition: Any medical condition applicable to the technology is listed here. For more, click on the "+#" button.
Supporting Evidence: The total amount of supporting evidence for the technology.
Medical Conditions View
This view shows all medical conditions that the measure is associated with. The following columns are available.
Medical Condition: The name of the medical condition, which links to its detail page.
Therapeutic Area: The therapeutic area associated with the medical condition.
ICD-10: The condition's ICD-10 code.
Supporting Evidence: The total amount of supporting evidence for the condition.
Next to Supporting Evidence is a "Learn More" button. Access to each medical condition is individually licensed. Clicking this button will prompt you to contact us to access the medical condition. You may also contact your HumanFirst representative.
Medical conditions are filterable only by Therapeutic Area. To refine your results even further, combine the filter with a search term.
